Health insurance helps people get the medical care they need to stay healthy and get help when someone in their family is sick or hurt. In 2009, nearly one quarter of the residents of Aurora did not have health insurance; that is over 85,000 people, more people than can fit into Invesco Field at Mile High. Even with health insurance, many people in Aurora, over 30,000, cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket expenses like co-payments, and co-insurance bills.
Making sure that everyone in Aurora has health insurance so residents can get health screenings for things like cancer and heart disease and afford to get medical care when they are sick is a key part of developing a strong health care system in Aurora. Colorado has many programs for families to get health coverage. To learn more about these programs and see if you might be eligible, visit Colorado’s new PEAK self-service website and follow the instructions.
Some of the things our Increase Access to Health Insurance Workgroup is doing include:
- We have recently been awarded a small grant from the State of Colorado to reach out to restaurants in our community to let them know about available programs like Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus
